Laser Lure

This year at ICAST I got to meet a lot of new and exciting people as well as a ton of new and exciting products. One product that caught my eye because of all my doubts was the laser Lure. I managed to have quite a long conversation with Bruce Young (Inventor of the Laser Lure) at the Laser Lure Booth. He explained to me how the laser lure was invented which was pretty wild. I was very interested after hearing his theories on how this work but wasn't convinced. So, Bruce being the nice guy that he is gave me a few to try out and here is my report.

(7:05AM) John Lakes- Winter Garden Florida

I starting out throwing the Laser Lure Jerk Bait in bright green fire tiger around some scattered grass. I notice on every cast the bright laser flashing in the murky water. After about 3 cast I stopped it and let it set for a second. Bang, first fish on weighing about 3lbs. I thought to my self wow..but lets see what else happens for I jump on this band wagon about the Laser Lure. I then made a second cast a little further up the grass patch and bang, second fish weighing about 2lbs. At this point I started getting a little excited about the reaction and as well as how deep this lure was in these fishes mouths. It seems as if these fish just couldn't stand this laser flashing around them. Almost like it started a frenzy. After catching a few more bass I came to my conclusion about the Laser Lure very easily.
First, the lure seems to make the strike zone so much bigger with the flashing laser on the front. I think it actually makes the fish mad and forces them to strike with aggression. Second, if you look at the lure not thinking about the laser aspect it actually is a very quality made lure. It's made with polybuterate plastic which is very strong, durable and will last a very long time Laser or not. After one day on the water I will definitely add more Laser Lure's to my arsenal and admit that it actually works very well. Product Review: Xtreme Lubricants

Well folks ICAST is now over and wow what a lot of things to see. I’m so excited because there are so many hot new products coming out onto the market this year. The one product that I have tested so far that has blown me away was a product called Xtreme Reel Lubricant from Xtreme Lubricants. I had the opportunity at the show to spend some time with Timothy Goldberg, President and CEO of Xtreme Lubricants on Friday while he explained the difference between their products and all the others. Basically their product is a liquid dry lubricant that dissolves grease and oil on contact. It opens the pores of the metal and fills them in with micro lubrication particles that are slippery, hydrophobic and stronger and will not absorb salt like wet lubricants. I was fortunate to get a bottle of reel lube from Timothy to try out Friday night before a day of fishing on Saturday. I first took my reel apart and put 1 drop of Xtreme Reel Lube on each moving part, then a few drops on my spool of line and let it sit overnight. The next day I was shocked at the extra 25 yards or so I was able to cast now, not to mention I didn’t have a backlash all day. I will most defiantly being using Xtreme Lubricants for all of my reels from now on. Everyone always tells you how well their product works, but for me I will tell you first hand there lubricants are the BEST. For more information on their products.

FISHING FOR SPRING TIME BASS
2/25/09

As lakes warm in the spring, largemouth bass move into shallow cover in coves, canals, and creeks. They seek warming water offered by these spots that also provide plentiful baitfish. Bass are eager to feed, but not yet aggressive in the cool water and they can be spooked very easy in these shallow areas that also tend to be clear.Try fishing weightless or nearly weightless softbaits, including stickbaits, tubes, worms, and lizards. Weightless lures sink slowly and look more lifelike as they rest in pockets among the vegetation. If its windy or a weigh is needed, a 1/16-ounce weight makes it easier to present the baits.

BASIC CARE SOMETIMES OVERLOOKED
2/15/09

When we go fishing we are always thinking about the lure’s we spend so much money on and if they are going to work, the diameter of the line we have on our rigs, and if someone else is going to be on our favorite spot. After our day is over we are thinking about the fish we lost, should I have gave up on the 12” fish I was catching all morning and looked for something bigger or different. The one thing most anglers do not think about is the proper care of their reels. Our reels are actually more important than our boat or motor. Fishing reels are kind of like our cars with out gas they don’t run; with out reels we can’t catch fish.

There are a few things we can do as anglers after a day of fishing to maintain the life of our reels with little effort at all. After all the last thing we want is our reel to cease up when throwing that $25 swim bait that our wives have no idea we bought causing it to go flying into god knows where.

Below our some tips for taking the proper steps in maintaining our fishing reels.

BASIC CARE -After a day's fishing, wipe down the reel with a damp cloth. 1 drop of oil should be applied to handle knob rivets, on each end of the spool shaft and the part of the spool shaft that passes through the pinion gear. Wipe off any debris or crud that you notice on the shaft.

Detail CARE- Approximately every six months year (depending on use) the reel should be thoroughly cleaned and re lubricated. If you do not feel comfortable doing this, I would highly recommend someone professional tackle this task. For questions or details on cleaning your reel please refer to your reel's specifications.

Lubrication
The following points document the proper maintenance guidelines that should be used for all Bait cast reels:

  • Your reel has been designed to provide years and years of dependable performance when properly maintained.
  • Be sure to exercise care when applying oil (1 drop) and grease use only (small amounts) when lubricating, as excess is unnecessary and can hinder performance of reel.
  • The more frequent or severe the use, the more often and thoroughly a reel should be serviced.

Lubrication points on casting reels are as follows (some part descriptions vary from reel to reel):

  • Oil:(1-2 drops of oil only) Spool Shaft Shims, Handle Knobs (both sides), Spool Release Mechanism, Level-Wind Stabilizer Bar, Level-Wind Worm Gear, Line Carriage Pawl, and Ball Bearings

Hopefully we all remember the next time we get off the water how important taking care of our gear really is.
